Ensenji Temple. A quiet sanctuary nestled in the bustling heart of Tokyo. This temple, with its rich history, offers a glimpse into the spiritual heart of Japan. Ensenji’s story begins in the late Nambokucho Period (1332-1392). The Taishi-do Hall and a smaller hall, Ensenbou, already existed. These structures served as the foundation for the Ensenji we know today. The temple was later restored by Great Master Kenkei in 1595.

Ensenji Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the community. Located in the Musashino plain, the area around Ensenji has been inhabited since the Jomon and Yayoi periods. This land, once a vital vegetable growing area for Edo (old Tokyo), witnessed the growth and evolution of Ensenji. As Taishido Village prospered, so did Ensenji. The temple grounds expanded. New buildings, including the Main Hall, were added.

Ensenji Temple holds some unique treasures. The Koshin Kuyoutou, or Memorial Towers for the Blue Warrior, were erected in 1672. These towers represent the early stage of Koshin belief in the Edo period, marking Ensenji as a center of this faith. Another treasure is the statue of Fudou Myouou, the Fierce Deity of Fire. This 49.5 cm high wooden figure, likely crafted during the Edo Period, is a striking example of yosegi-tsukuri, a technique of assembling separately carved wood blocks.

Ensenji Temple has faced its share of adversity. In 1857, a devastating fire destroyed all the temple buildings. Through the dedication of its followers, the Main Hall, Taishi-do Hall, and priests’ living quarters were reconstructed in 1860. Though less grand than their predecessors, these rebuilt structures symbolized the resilience of the temple and its community. Ensenji also weathered the anti-Buddhist movement of the early Meiji Period. Thanks to Great Master Eison and the unwavering support of its followers, the temple survived. It even escaped the air raids of World War II.

Ensenji continued to evolve. The Taishi-do Hall corridor was repaired in 1951. The Main Hall and graveyard were improved in 1964. The Taishi-do Hall roof was repaired in 1969. The Heisei era brought further renovations, including the construction of the Taishi Assembly Hall and its annex, and the refurbishment of the Main Hall. Ensenji Temple is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to faith, resilience, and community. It stands as a spiritual shelter. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the human spirit. As part of the Eighty-eight Holy Places of Tamagawa, Ensenji welcomes all who seek solace and connection to Japan’s rich spiritual heritage.
