“Where exactly is Sāo Rafael?” someone asks. Sāo Rafael is a district nestled in the subprefecture of Sāo Mateus. It lies within the vast city of Sāo Paulo, Brazil.

Sāo Rafael covers an area of approximately 13.1 square kilometers. In 2008, the population was around 148,778. This gives Sāo Rafael a density of about 11,360.17 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Administratively, Sāo Rafael falls under the Sāo Mateus subprefecture. The district is part of the eastern zone of Sāo Paulo. Its neighboring districts include Sāo Mateus to the northwest. Iguatemi lies to the northeast. To the south, it borders Mauá.

Sāo Paulo itself is a major state in southeastern Brazil. It borders the Atlantic Ocean. Minas Gerais is to the northeast. Rio de Janeiro lies to the east. Paraná is to the southwest. Mato Grosso do Sul is to the west. Sāo Paulo is the most economically productive state in Brazil. It is also the most populous. The city of Sāo Paulo is the largest in Brazil. It is a major urban center globally.

The state’s landscape features a 600-kilometer coastline. The Serra do Mar mountains border this narrow coastal zone. Further inland, an extensive plateau rises. This plateau slopes toward the Paraná River. The Paraná and its tributaries drain the region.

Sāo Paulo’s climate varies. The coast is hot with heavy rainfall. The plateau has mild temperatures. Rainfall is ample, but temperatures are lower due to the elevation.

The region’s vegetation once boasted diverse evergreen forests. Today, remnants remain in the highlands. Various hardwoods and medicinal plants can still be found. The animal life includes jaguars and tapirs in the forests. Coastal wetlands host capybaras and alligators.

Historically, Tupí-Guaraní and Tapuia peoples inhabited the area. Later, Portuguese colonizers arrived. They brought African slaves. European immigration further shaped the population.

Sāo Paulo’s economy is diverse. Manufacturing and services dominate. Agriculture is mechanized, producing coffee, sugarcane, and fruits. Santos serves as the nation’s busiest port. Sāo Paulo city has an international airport and cultural institutions.

The Portuguese established a settlement in 1532. The captaincy of Sāo Vicente was granted to Martim Afonso de Souza. In 1681, it was renamed Sāo Paulo. The town of Sāo Paulo became the capital.

In the 18th century, Paulistas explored the west and north. They formed expeditions called bandeiras. Coffee planting in the 19th century brought a new economic era.

Brazil’s national independence was proclaimed in Sāo Paulo in 1822. The region became a state in 1889. Paulistas have since held prominent political positions.
