From humble beginnings Good Hope High School stands tall. This isn’t just any school. It’s a testament to perseverance. It started as Good Hope Training School in 1929. Classes were held in a Salt River church. Ms Vicky Sutherland was its first principal.
The school’s journey is one of growth and relocation. In 1930 it moved to Riverside farm. The school expanded greatly. By the mid-1950s Pastor CC Marias envisioned a “Greater Good Hope”. This led to a move to the Vorentoe farm in Kuils River in 1963. Ps G Coetzee became the new principal. The school thrived. It housed over 300 students. Many travelled from far to get a Seventh-day Adventist education.
The school’s buildings grew too. A double-story classroom block was built. So were dorms a dining hall and a library. Other additions included a woodwork block a science building and a primary school.
Changes came in the 1970s. The Theology section merged with Helderberg College. By 1982 the school became a high school. The primary school operated separately.
Good Hope High School developed a strong reputation. Its choirs won many awards. Principals and choir directors came and went shaping the school’s musical legacy. Dr I F du Preez the long-serving registrar is remembered for his kindness. He established the primary school. He served as its first principal.
Today Good Hope High School remains a Christian school. It’s a place where students feel like family. They learn service and the joy of giving back to the world. It boasts 20 educators 6 administrative staff 7 auxiliary staff and 354 learners. This is Good Hope High School a legacy built on faith hard work and a dedication to education. It stands as a beacon of hope in the Cape Town community.
