Did Prague’s Obchodní Centrum Zahradní Město foresee its own transformation? Built in 1969, the center, then known as Obchodní dům Cíl, was the heart of the Zahradní Město neighborhood. It was a bustling hub, a mix of shops, social spaces, and even a transportation nexus. Imagine the scene: the open-air atrium with its travertine fountain, the sculpture “Tanec” by Ladislav Kovařík catching the sunlight. Shoppers strolled from the Pramen supermarket to the bookstore, stopping for a coffee in the circular cafe or maybe a dance at the disco. This was a community gathering place, a symbol of modern life in 1960s Prague. Obchodní Centrum Zahradní Město even played a role in Czech cinematic history. Scenes from the children’s series “Pan Tau” were filmed here in 1969, followed by the movie “Akce Bororo” in 1972. Later, in 1990, the comedy “Vrať se do hrobu!” featured the center as a backdrop. The 1990s brought privatization and the first significant changes to Obchodní Centrum Zahradní Město. The once open atrium was enclosed, and the familiar name “Cíl” began to fade. The bus stop, once simply “Cíl”, was renamed “Centrum Zahradní Město”. Various names, like “OC Atrium Cíl” and “Galeria Shopping”, were tried, but none truly stuck. The colorful advertising often obscured any clear identification of the center. Obchodní Centrum Zahradní Město faced further transformations. Behind the center, a new parking lot was built where a cinema had once been planned. Inside, shops changed hands rapidly, leaving many spaces empty. While the bank remained a constant, the bookstore transformed into a rotating cast of drugstores. The once vibrant upper-level cafe became a smoky, uninviting space, mirroring the fate of many businesses within the center. Despite the challenges, Obchodní Centrum Zahradní Město continues to serve its community. The supermarket, though under different brands over the years, remains a vital resource. The library branch, after a temporary closure and renovation in 2017, reopened in 2019, bigger and better than before. And finally, in 2019, the dilapidated area in front of the center underwent a much-needed revitalization. New paving, trees, benches, and a stage were added, creating a welcoming space for the neighborhood. Obchodní Centrum Zahradní Město stands as a testament to the evolving needs of a community. While its original vision of a combined commercial, social, and cultural center may have shifted, it continues to adapt. This resilience, combined with the tangible history embedded in its walls and surrounding spaces, makes it a truly unique landmark in Prague.
