“Cursed,” they say if you walk across it at night. This is the Kohoku Bridge, also known as \u6c5f\u5317\u9678\u6a4b.
Welcome to one of Tokyo’s most haunted spots. This bridge is located in Adachi. It sits north of Shinjuku.
The Kohoku Bridge has a dark history. It is infamous for repeated traffic accidents. Ghost sightings followed these accidents. This gave the bridge its eerie reputation.
The story began about 30 years ago. On December 12, 1989, a car crashed through the guardrail. The car plunged into the river below. The driver was never found.
After this tragic event, more cars followed. They drove over the edge in similar accidents. Drivers reported a bizarre phenomenon. They claimed their vision warped. The bridge seemed to curve suddenly. As they steered to follow this curve, they drove off the edge.
In the mid-90s, the bridge was remodeled. The guardrails were strengthened. This reduced the number of accidents. Yet, the ghostly tales persisted.
Drivers and pedestrians reported seeing a female ghost. She floated near the bridge. Her origins remain a mystery. Was she a victim of an accident? Did she live nearby? No one knows.
Others have claimed to be chased by a man on a bike. Many other ghostly apparitions haunt this place.
Numerous accidents led to purification rituals. These rituals aimed to cleanse the area. But they proved ineffective. One famous medium visited the bridge. They declared, “Nothing can be done here.”
Groups of ghosts are said to linger beneath the bridge. People playing baseball nearby might encounter them. One man felt a tap on his shoulder. When he turned, nobody was there.
A medium suggested the area under the bridge acts as a “ghost magnet”. The river’s undulation strengthens this effect. The bridge’s construction over this spot made it prone to accidents and ghostly sightings.
Other chilling incidents have been reported at the Kohoku Bridge. Some hear drums and an orchestra. The music lures people to the edge. Drivers suddenly feel tired while crossing. They see a pale-faced woman staring at them. An elderly spirit and his dog are sometimes seen walking along the path. People trying to take photos find their cameras fail. But the cameras work fine elsewhere.
Completed in 1967, the Kohoku Bridge is a steel girder bridge. It features a steel tied arch span. This spans the shipping channel. The bridge has simple spans on large pier walls. Look for the floral motif on the railing. Note the lampposts on the outside.
