Established in 1936 by President Franklin D Roosevelt the Patuxent Research Refuge is unique. It’s the only National Wildlife Refuge dedicated to wildlife research. Imagine a sprawling 12800 acres of land. This land surrounds the Patuxent and Little Patuxent Rivers. It lies between Washington DC and Baltimore. The refuge wasn’t always this large. It started with just 2670 acres. Over time it grew incorporating land previously managed by the Departments of Agriculture and Defense.
The Patuxent Research Refuge isn’t just about research. It’s a haven for wildlife. Over 1100 species of vascular plants thrive here. More than 270 bird species call it home. During migration many waterfowl rest and feed. You might even spot a bald eagle. The refuge plays a vital role. It’s one of the largest forested areas in the mid-Atlantic region. This provides crucial habitat for native and migratory birds. Urban development fragments forests harming many neotropical migratory bird populations. The refuge offers a crucial sanctuary.
The refuge is divided into three areas. The North Tract offers hunting fishing and trails. The Central Tract houses the refuge headquarters and the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Research studies happen here. The South Tract features the National Wildlife Visitor Center. This visitor center is the nation’s largest for environmental science and education. It’s run by the US Department of the Interior. Sadly the refuge has a darker side. In 1996 three women were murdered near the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. One man involved Dustin Higgs was executed for the crime.
Despite its tragic past the Patuxent Research Refuge remains a place of beauty. A place of vital research. Its existence is a marvel. It’s a testament to conservation amid relentless development. The refuge offers a vital space for wildlife to flourish. It provides a place for people to connect with nature. So take some time. Explore the trails and visitor center. Learn about the important work conducted at the Patuxent Research Refuge. Discover the beauty and significance of this special place.
