Nestled behind Stockholm University Library, on a gentle slope known as Gubbacken, stands the Gula Villan. Gula Villan translates to “Yellow Villa,” a name that perfectly captures its sunny, cheerful exterior. This charming wooden structure, painted in a vibrant yellow with contrasting black metal roof, dates back to 1883. Designed by Adolf Wilhelm Edelsvärd, the chief architect of the Swedish State Railways (SJ), the Gula Villan wasn’t always so brightly colored. Originally, it sported a more subdued palette with brown trim. The Gula Villan was initially known as “Intendentsvillan” or the Superintendent’s Villa, built for Abraham Forssell, the superintendent of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture’s experimental field. Forssell’s tenure was short-lived, lasting only two years due to financial mismanagement. The villa then became the home and laboratory of Jakob Eriksson, a newly appointed botanist at the experimental field. Eriksson achieved international recognition for his research on plant diseases, conducted with his assistant Ernst Henning. The Gula Villan also became known for its legendary parties, often attended by prominent figures like Svante Arrhenius, a Nobel laureate in Chemistry. After Eriksson’s retirement, other notable scientists resided at the Gula Villan, including Olof Arrhenius. The villa later housed the Academy’s secretary from the 1930s to the 1960s. When Stockholm University relocated to Frescati, the student union rented the Gula Villan, converting it into a daycare center known as Knattekåren. In 1988, the Humanities Association at Stockholm University became a tenant. They shared the space with the Natural Sciences Association until 2005. The Gula Villan remains a vital hub for the Humanities Association, hosting a variety of activities. Interestingly, the popular music festival Dans Dakar originated on the villa’s veranda, eventually expanding to the surrounding lawns. A major renovation in 2011 briefly disrupted activities, pushing events to other locations. Today, the Gula Villan stands as a testament to its rich history, from scientific research and lively gatherings to its current role as a cultural center.
