Made from recycled wood, The Grove Sculpture might appear simple at first glance. But let me tell you, it holds a story as deep as the harbor waters beside us. The Grove Sculpture isn’t just art. It’s a tribute to Wellington’s maritime past, a whisper of the city’s history echoing through time.

Created by artist Glen Hayward, The Grove Sculpture is made of 16 “copper-headed nails”. These “nails” are actually massive wooden beams driven into the pavement. They might remind you of giant nails you’d use to build a ship, and that’s no coincidence! They represent the very nails used in shipbuilding back in the 1800s, like those found in the city’s founding ship, the Plimmer’s Ark.

What’s fascinating is that the wood itself is recycled. It comes from old Wellington ferry wharves, echoing the constant cycle of construction and renewal that defines any harbor city. And if you look closely, you’ll see the wood has been treated with a special Japanese technique called “shou sugi ban”. This involves burning and oiling the wood, giving it a unique, weathered look and incredible longevity. So, The Grove Sculpture isn’t just a monument to the past; it’s a testament to enduring craftsmanship, whispering tales of the sea to those who stop and listen.
