A red brick church stands before you. This is St Matthew’s United Church. Its story isn’t just etched in stone but woven into the fabric of Toronto itself.

St Matthew’s United Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith community and resilience. Its roots stretch back far beyond its current structure. Long before the imposing red brick building you see today a small group of Methodists held services in cottages. This was in 1867. They were the seeds of what would become St Matthew’s.

These early worshippers built Zion Methodist Church in 1889. It was a smaller church made of red brick. A Sunday school building followed in 1915. The congregation grew. They needed a bigger space. A new building was planned on Rushton Road and St Clair. Richard Perry generously donated the land. The cornerstone was laid in 1924. The church was dedicated later that year. This impressive structure seated 850 people. The Crang family donated an organ a gift that continues to fill the church with music.

The story of St Matthew’s continues to unfold. In 1966 St Clair United Church and St Columba united. This union gave birth to the St Matthew’s United Church we know today. The current building a beautiful example of Methodist architecture remains a vibrant hub. It hosts diverse groups and events. It welcomes everyone regardless of background.

More than a place of worship St Matthew’s United Church is a community centre. It houses a nursery school a drop-in program and various classes. Its enduring spirit is a testament to the power of faith. Its evolution from humble cottages to a majestic building reflects the growth of Toronto. The church continues to serve the community. It is a living embodiment of its rich history. It represents unwavering hope and love.
