Gazing upon Konradsbergsparken, can you sense the echoes of its past? Konradsbergsparken isn’t just a green space. It’s a place steeped in history, a testament to Stockholm’s ever-evolving landscape. The park carries the name of the former Konradsberg mental hospital. This institution, designed by architect Albert Törnqvist, stood here from 1855 to 1995. Its buildings, the oldest on the site, now whisper tales of bygone eras. In 1938, Fredhäll’s elementary school joined the scene, designed by Paul Hedqvist. This school, located on the western edge of the present-day Campus Konradsberg, became a part of the area’s transformation. During the 1950s, additional school buildings sprouted nearby. Interestingly, the 1940s saw plans to demolish the hospital and transform the entire area, including Konradsbergsparken, into residential blocks. A 1944 city plan reveals streets named after famous authors, like Heidenstamsgatan and Lagerlövsgatan. Neighborhoods were to be christened with names of constellations: Dolphin, Southern Cross, Gemini, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Unicorn, and Libra. This transformation, however, remained incomplete. The spirit of change revived in the 1980s and 1990s, but a new plan in 1999 preserved most of the historic structures. Extensive renovations and additions followed. Akademiska Hus, then owner of the site, transformed the area for Stockholm’s University College of Teacher Education. Architects like Brunnberg & Forshed and Johan Celsings contributed to this revitalization. The college moved in 2003, complete with educational facilities and a sports center, now known as Konradsbergs idrottshall. Twenty-three buildings, named after authors, psychologists, educators, and philosophers, formed the new campus. Later, Stockholm University integrated the teacher’s college into its main campus. Akademiska Hus then reimagined Konradsberg as a specialized school campus. They partnered with the Special Education School Authority, and several special schools relocated here, including Manillaskolan, Hällsboskolan, and Stockholm International Montessori School. Today, Konradsbergsparken sits within this vibrant campus, home to approximately 3,000 students from preschool to high school. This tranquil park, therefore, bears witness to a fascinating evolution, from a hospital to a teacher’s college to the bustling educational hub it is today.
