Hidden beneath the surface lies Ågesta Nuclear Plant. A relic of Sweden’s early nuclear age. It stands as a testament to ambition. A bold experiment in harnessing atomic power.
Built in 1964 Ågesta was Sweden’s first commercial nuclear power plant. It was also known as the R3 reactor the third reactor built in the country. ASEA a prominent Swedish engineering firm constructed this underground marvel. The project’s initial budget was SEK 50 million. The final cost however ballooned to a staggering SEK 230 million.
Ågesta’s unique design involved heavy water moderation and natural uranium fuel. Its primary purpose was district heating. It supplied Farsta a Stockholm suburb. The plant also generated a modest amount of electricity a mere 12 MW. The underground location fueled speculation about military applications. It was believed that Ågesta could produce plutonium a key component in nuclear weapons.
The reactor operated for a decade. It finally shut down in 1974. Declining oil prices rendered its operation unprofitable. Stringent new safety regulations also contributed to its closure. Ironically the 1973 oil crisis proved the decision premature. High oil prices highlighted the value of alternative energy sources.
Two significant incidents marked Ågesta’s history. In 1968 cladding damage on fuel rods was discovered. Radioactivity levels in the reactor water increased. This led to the reactor’s immediate shutdown. Extensive damage to fuel elements resulted. Parts of fuel elements fell to the reactor tank’s bottom. Some even entered the primary coolant circuits. Vibrations caused damage to the fuel cladding resulting in radioactivity leaks.
In 1969 a major leak occurred. A flood disabled parts of the secondary loop’s safety systems. A pressure surge during a pump change shattered a check valve. Four hundred cubic meters of water cascaded from a cooling tower 30 meters above. The water hit generator busbars halting the turbine. Control cabinets for safety systems were submerged. This caused several safety systems to malfunction.
Despite its closure Ågesta remains largely intact. The heavy water was sold to Canada. The spent fuel is now at the CLAB repository. Two steam generators were dismantled in the mid-1990s. After decontamination they were sold as scrap metal.
Today Ågesta serves as a training ground for Stockholm’s fire department. It also serves as a material depot. Some hope to make it a museum. A reminder of Sweden’s pioneering efforts and the challenges of early nuclear technology. Ågesta stands as a powerful symbol. It reminds us of the complex legacy of nuclear power.
