What if I told you this seemingly ordinary building holds extraordinary stories? This is Phillips Laurel School. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It’s a place where lives are transformed. Phillips Laurel School, located in Laurel, Maryland, opened its doors in 1994. It’s not part of the Howard County Public School System, but it serves families within the county. The school occupies a building with its own rich history. It was once the headquarters of High’s Dairy, built in 1961. Phillips Laurel School caters to students aged 8 to 21, grades 3 through 12, who have emotional, learning, or behavioral disabilities that make it difficult for them to thrive in a traditional school setting. The school offers a 10-month program, including a 5-week summer school, and provides a range of services. These services include counseling, family services, speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The school’s goal is to equip these students with the academic skills and behavioral tools they need to transition to a less restrictive environment. Interestingly, the high school program offers both credit and noncredit courses, tailored to individual student needs. They even have work experience programs, both on and off-campus. Phillips Laurel School is dedicated to providing a nurturing environment. The school even added a culinary arts/urban agriculture program in 2017, further expanding opportunities for its students. Phillips Laurel School demonstrates that with the right support, every child has the potential to succeed.
