A 2015 renovation brought sunlight streaming through a double ceiling. It also improved ventilation, expanding the locker rooms and bathing areas. Mikokuyu Sento isn’t an onsen with volcanic spring water. It’s a sento, meaning it uses heated tap water for its baths. This distinction places it within a unique category of Japanese bathhouses. Inside, wooden lockers line the entrance, a nostalgic nod to tradition. A reception area leads to a waiting room. Here families gather and friends chat before their bath. Vending machines hum, dispensing tickets, drinks, and even beer. Two lifts whisk bathers upwards, one for men, one for women, distinguished by pink curtains. The bathing floors alternate weekly between the 4th and 5th levels. The 4th evokes a cave-like atmosphere with three temperature baths: high (43-46 degrees), medium (39.5-42 degrees), and low (25 degrees). The 5th floor offers a more romantic setting. A colorful mural of Mount Fuji, inspired by Hokusai’s “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji,” adorns the wall. The ceiling design mimics the open sky. This gives the illusion of bathing outdoors. From both floors, you can glimpse the majestic Tokyo Skytree. Mikokuyu Sento provides even more than just a traditional bath. Families can opt for private welfare-type baths.
