Considering its location in a bustling urban setting, would you believe that Rock Creek Regional Park offers a serene escape? Established by an Act of Congress on September 27 1890 Rock Creek Park covers over 1754 acres. That is approximately 2.74 square miles.

Rock Creek Park is not just a park. It is a historic landmark. President Benjamin Harrison signed the Act into law. This made it the third national park. Yellowstone and Mackinac National Park preceded it. Sequoia was established around the same time. Yosemite followed shortly after.

Imagine over two million people visit Rock Creek Park each year. They come to enjoy various recreational activities. There is something for everyone here. You can find a golf course for golf enthusiasts. There are also hiking trails for those who love to explore. Biking and equestrian trails wind through the park. Tennis courts, a nature center and playgrounds are also available. Picnic facilities invite families to relax.

Did you know Rock Creek Park is more than recreation? It is also home to cultural exhibits. Peirce Mill stands as a testament to the past. It is a water-powered grist mill. Isaac Peirce built it in the 1820s. It became part of Rock Creek Park in 1892. Today, you can still visit this historic mill.

Let me tell you about the Rock Creek Park Horse Center. Founded in 1972 it offers trail and pony rides. You can even take lessons here. The stable primarily teaches English riding. They emphasize lower-level jumping and dressage. The Rock Creek Riders program provides therapeutic riding. It is available for adults and children with special needs.

Also interesting are the multi-use trails. They serve both commuters and recreational users. The mainline trail extends for about 1.6 km. That is roughly 0.99 miles. It runs from Broad Branch Road to the southern end of the park. The northern trails form a loop. They run along Bingham Road, Oregon Avenue, Beach Road and Military Road.

The Rock Creek Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 23 1991. This recognizes the park’s historical significance.

Rock Creek Park is administered by the National Park Service. It also oversees other federally owned properties. These include Meridian Hill Park and the Old Stone House. Some of the Fort Circle Parks are also administered. These forts once defended the nation’s capital during the Civil War.

The park’s golf course designed by William Flynn opened in 1923. It initially had nine holes. It expanded to 18 holes three years later. Segregation persisted until 1941. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes ordered them all opened to African Americans.

Take a moment to appreciate the bridges. The Lauzun’s Legion, Dumbarton, Taft and Duke Ellington bridges span the creek.

Rock Creek Park is more than just a park. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. It offers a unique experience for all who visit. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, there’s always something new to discover in Rock Creek Park.
