“Where will our displaced neighbors sleep tonight?” That’s what Tara Ruszkowski, Executive Director of the Lamb Center, asked. We are standing at Mantua Park in Fairfax County. It is a place that has seen its share of challenges.

In August, authorities posted signs. These signs warned of an upcoming cleanup day. It was part of an effort to address encampments on county land. These encampments bordered Fairfax City. Outreach workers had been meeting with people living in Mantua Park. They assessed their needs. They connected them with available services. The county’s primary concern was safety. They noted the unsafe living conditions. There was no running water for those living in tents.
On a Wednesday morning, work crews cleared a large homeless encampment. Fairfax County police officers were present to provide protection. The encampment stretched roughly 500 feet. It was located about 50 feet south of Route 50. Vacant tents dotted clearings between the trees. Makeshift shelters constructed from tarps and branches were also present. Bags of garbage were piled around the encampment.
The City of Fairfax issued an alert notifying residents about the activity. This was despite Fairfax County not sending out a public notice. The Lamb Center is nearby. It is a homeless day shelter in Fairfax City. Tara Ruszkowski expressed deep concern for those displaced. She highlighted the lack of immediate housing options. Waiting lists for shelter beds often exceeded 90 days.
Mantua Park is located near the Mantua Hills neighborhood. This neighborhood began in the 1960s. It is known for its community. The Mantua Swim and Tennis Club serves as a social hub. Eakin Community Park is also nearby. It offers picnic areas, playgrounds, and walking trails.
Mantua itself is a census-designated place in Fairfax County. Most homes were built between the 1950s and 1980s. As of 2020, the population was 7,503. Mantua Elementary School opened in 1961. It has a history of innovation in technology.
The clearing of the Mantua Park encampment highlights the challenges. It reflects the ongoing need for compassionate solutions to homelessness. The community must work together.
