Rural Press a publishing giant. Its story began not here but with John Fairfax. He arrived in Australia in the 1830s. He acquired the Sydney Herald in 1841. It grew to become Australia’s largest newspaper.

The Fairfax family built an empire. Their influence spread across newspapers magazines and even television. Generations of Fairfaxes expanded the business through acquisitions. The Illawarra Mercury and Home and Art in Australia joined their portfolio. They even launched a national weekend paper the National Times.

However the family’s control wavered. A takeover attempt in the 1980s threatened the empire. When Warwick Fairfax senior died in 1987 his son tried to take the company private. This led to a split. John B Fairfax and his brother disagreed.

The ensuing battle reshaped the Australian media landscape. Rural Press emerged from the breakup. It focused on rural and agricultural publications. The Land a newspaper founded in 1911 became a cornerstone. It served the farming community in NSW.

Rural Press wasn’t just newspapers. They built a network of rural radio stations. They expanded into the US acquiring Farm Progress Group. This added dozens of state focused farming publications to their holdings. Their digital presence grew too. Farming Online became a key part of their strategy.

The company’s growth continued into the new century. Acquisitions remained central to their strategy. They bought Federal Capital Press adding the Canberra Times. They expanded further acquiring more titles in various states. By 2004 revenues topped AUD 400 million.

John B Fairfax remained chairman. Brian K McCarthy served as managing director. They led the company to become a major force. Rural Press’ legacy is one of expansion and adaptation. It reflects the spirit of the Australian farming community. The company’s story continues to unfold. Its history is etched into the Australian media landscape.
