Founded in 1887, Toyo University started as Shiritsu Tetsugakukan. This was a Private School of Philosophy. Enryo Inoue founded it at Rinsho-in Temple. He believed philosophy was neglected in Japanese higher learning.
Now, standing before Toyo University, you’re facing a place of deep history. It is a place with a commitment to global education. The school moved to its current Hakusan Campus in 1906. It then changed its name to Toyo University. The school adopted the motto “Protection of Country and Love of Truth”.
Toyo University initially offered courses in philosophy and ethics. Courses included religion and education. Japanese and classical Chinese were also taught. Over time, the university expanded. In 1949, a major restructuring occurred. Faculties of Literature, Economics, Law, and Sociology were established. Engineering and Business Administration faculties also joined. Regional Development Studies and Life Sciences came in April 1997. A law school was created in April 2004. The Bio-Nano Electronics Research Centre was founded in 2003.
Today, Toyo University has eleven graduate schools. It has a law school and eleven undergraduate faculties. There are forty-four departments. Various research institutes also exist. Five affiliated high schools serve over 30,000 students.
Toyo University has multiple campuses. The main Hakusan Campus is in Bunkyo, Tokyo. Other campuses include Akabane, Asaka, and Kawagoe. There are campuses in Itakura and Otemachi. You can also find a Sports Center and even a Bangkok Office.

Toyo University celebrated its 130th anniversary in 2017. Over 100,000 high school students apply each year. In 2013, Toyo was named a Top Global University. This was by MEXT. MEXT is the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.
Toyo University began accepting female students in 1916. This made it one of the first co-educational private universities in Japan.
