This impressive church began its journey in 1900. It started as the Dent Chapel in Bladensburg Maryland. Reverend Abraham Dent was its first pastor. The original chapel tragically suffered severe flood damage in the late 1950s. This forced the congregation to find a new home.
Undeterred they opened the doors of the new Reid Temple AME Church on October 4 1964. This was in Washington DC on Michigan Avenue NE. Initial challenges included significant debt and limited facilities. Despite these setbacks the congregation persevered. Their numbers grew to 300 members.
In January 1989 Reid Temple relocated again. This time to Good Luck Road in Lanham Maryland. This move reflected its expanding community and growing influence. The church’s current location features a state-of-the-art worship center with a seating capacity of 3000. A 300-member choir often accompanies services supported by a full band with electric guitars organ and drums. The building boasts excellent acoustics and modern sound and video systems.
Today Reid Temple AME Church thrives under the leadership of Reverend Dr Mark E Whitlock Jr. Appointed in 2019 he continues the church’s mission of spiritual social and physical development for all people. The church is actively involved in community outreach. It offers scholarships educational programs and social services to those in need. The Reid Temple Christian Academy provides education up to the 8th grade. The Reid Community Development Corporation assists socially and economically disadvantaged residents. Even a Reid Temple Bible College opened in 2018.
