The Bismarckturm Würzburg was erected in 1905. It served as a monument to Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck was revered as a co-founder of the German Empire. The tower is in the Bismarckwäldchen. This is above the vineyard on the Stein.
Did you know that Bismarck towers like this one share common features? The design comes from an architectural competition. The winning design was called “Götterdämmerung” by Wilhelm Kreis. This design served as a template for many other Bismarck towers. Another common feature was a fire bowl at the top. This bowl was lit on special occasions. It created a beacon visible from afar.
The Bismarckturm Würzburg stands 15 meters tall. It offers a wide view. You can see the university campus to the east. Many church towers of the old city are also visible. To the west lies the Festung Marienberg.
The Bismarckwäldchen itself has an interesting history. Until the 1870s, the ridge was bare. Then, the Verschönerungsverein Würzburg began planting trees. They created an avenue of walnut trees. This stretched about 2.5 km from Lindleinsberg to Steinberg. From 1876 to about 1904, the high plateau was afforested.
The Bismarckwäldchen is a designated natural monument since 1943. It covers approximately 6.7 hectares. It features a mixed forest with grassy clearings. Robust native trees were planted here. You can find maple trees, beech trees, spruce trees and pine trees. Oak trees, ash trees, elm trees and chestnut trees also grow here.
Various birds inhabit the area. These include the whitethroat, red-backed shrike and nightingale. You might also spot a pheasant, green woodpecker or wryneck. Bats are also found in the Bismarckwäldchen. The area also improves the city’s climate. It serves as a local recreation area with trails and a playground.
Up until the 1950s, park rangers kept order in the Bismarckwäldchen. They wore blue uniforms with the city’s coat of arms. Today, only the weather shelter of the guards remains. It was built in 1929/1930.
Reaching the Bismarckturm Würzburg is quite easy. From the Stein-Wein-Pfad, it’s a comfortable walk. It’s an ideal destination for a short hike near the city center. A direct ascent from the main train station takes about 20-25 minutes. If you have about 1.5 hours, take the Stein-Wein-Pfad westward. Then return via the Panorama path.
