Built of buff bricks with dark brick and stone dressings. That’s how the architect described Kogarah High School’s older section. Imagine those bricks laid in 1891. This magnificent building stands as a testament to the dedication of those who built it. It’s more than just a school. Kogarah High School is a living piece of history. It’s a place where generations of students have learned and grown.

Kogarah High School opened its doors in 1891. It wasn’t always the co-educational powerhouse we see today. It started as a combined infants and primary school. The railway’s expansion in the 1880s brought a significant increase in student numbers. Think of the hustle and bustle that must have followed. Students came from miles around.

Initially the school was split. There was a girls’ section and a boys’ section. In 1916 a part of the girls’ section broke off to form St George Girls High School. Even then girls continued their education at Kogarah Central Domestic Science School. The infants’ and primary sections moved in 1954. They settled into the building of the current Kogarah Public School. Eventually in 1963 the boys’ and girls’ high schools merged. That’s how Kogarah High School became the co-educational institution it is today.

The school’s four sporting houses are named after notable alumni. Ken Rosewall a tennis legend. Bruce Crampton a celebrated golfer. Norman O’Neill a legendary cricketer. Gary Chapman an Olympic and Commonwealth Games swimming medalist. These names represent the school’s long history of sporting excellence. Many other notable alumni emerged from Kogarah High School. They have made their mark in various fields. These range from politics and sports to the arts and academia. Think of Bill Crabtree MLA for Kogarah for 31 years. Or Moira Gatens a prominent feminist philosopher. John Hewson a former leader of the federal opposition is another example.

Today Kogarah High School continues its legacy. The school proudly embraces its rich past. It provides a quality education for students. Walk these grounds and feel the weight of history beneath your feet. Each brick each window each hallway whispers tales of students past. Kogarah High School isn’t just a building. It’s a community. It’s a legacy. It’s a testament to the enduring power of education.
