Gazing upon this towering structure, have you ever wondered about the vital role the East Hills Elevated Reservoir plays in quenching Sydney’s thirst? The East Hills Elevated Reservoir, a steel giant standing tall against the skyline, isn’t just a landmark. It’s a testament to Sydney’s ever-growing need for water. This reservoir, known as WS87, shares a lineage with three other elevated steel reservoirs: Bellevue Hill, Drummoyne, and Ashfield. All four were erected between 1910 and 1912, showcasing a masterful blend of engineering and architectural flair. They are elevated cylindrical riveted steel tanks, each resting on a concrete apron and supported by a steel girder frame. The concrete columns and arches that adorn the perimeter are not just decorative. They are a nod to an era where functionality and aesthetics went hand in hand. Originally, a walkway encircled the rim of the reservoir, allowing workers to monitor and maintain this vital piece of infrastructure. Though the walkway is now gone, other features remain. You can still see the tubular steel handrail, the davit, the access ladder, the depth gauge board, and the inlet and outlet valve chambers. The East Hills Elevated Reservoir has a full service level of 92 meters and a capacity of 6.6 megaliters. To protect the water quality, a roof was added in 1977. The East Hills Elevated Reservoir site is also home to more than just WS87. Here, you’ll find remnants of Penshurst Reservoir No. 1, its concrete base a silent witness to the past. The brick stand for the 1891 Penshurst Tank also stands here, along with valves and pipework that connect the Woronora and Upper Nepean water systems. Even some skid huts remain, offering a glimpse into the working conditions of those who built and maintained these essential structures. The site boasts a variety of plantings. Cypress, viburnum, jacaranda, camphor laurel, oleander, and native species all contribute to a unique landscape. The East Hills Elevated Reservoir, a vital part of Sydney’s water supply, stands as a testament to the city’s growth and ingenuity.
