Standing right in front of the Lichtzeichen Talmud Tora Schul Light, do you see that towering five-meter-tall metallic structure, looking like a twisted Star of David? Imagine for a moment the history that took place here. This light sculpture is a symbol of the Talmud Tora Schul, the Jewish religious school that stood here before 1938. Sadly, the Nazi regime systematically destroyed this building and many others like it during the pogrom in November 1938. This tragic episode led to the devastation of Jewish life and culture within Vienna. The Lichtzeichen project was established to commemorate the destroyed synagogues, schools, temples, and prayer rooms that once thrived in Vienna. The Lichtzeichen network consists of 26 identical columns, each commemorating a specific location. The Talmud Tora Schul’s light is located in the second district, Vienna, standing proudly on Malzgasse 16. The light sculpture is like a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the spirit of remembrance and remembrance can shine through. You may feel an overwhelming sense of sadness or even anger when you stand here, but remember, the Lichtzeichen are here to ensure that the legacy of Vienna’s past is not forgotten and that the destruction of 1938 is never repeated.
