Stepping onto the University of Toronto Scarborough campus, look towards Harmony Commons. It’s hard to miss this impressive structure. Harmony Commons isn’t just a student residence. It’s a testament to sustainable architecture and community living. This building, completed in 2024, houses 746 first-year students and their resident advisors. It also boasts the campus’s first full dining hall, student life offices, and campus security headquarters. Harmony Commons is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s designed to foster a sense of belonging. The architects cleverly incorporated the surrounding natural environment into the design. Many rooms and common areas offer stunning views of a preserved grove of trees to the north. The ground-level dining hall also shares this connection with nature, making mealtimes a truly unique experience. What truly sets Harmony Commons apart is its Passive House certification. This makes it the largest Passive House project in Canada and the largest Passive House dormitory worldwide. It’s a remarkable feat of engineering. Compared to other dormitories on campus, Harmony Commons consumes 70% less energy. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an astounding 90% per person. This incredible efficiency is achieved through a high-performance building envelope, low-energy systems, and heat recovery from ventilation exhaust and wastewater. The building’s all-electric systems further reduce emissions, capitalizing on Ontario’s increasingly renewable electricity grid. Even with a bustling commercial kitchen serving over 3,000 meals daily, Harmony Commons operates without any on-site fossil fuel combustion. The exterior of Harmony Commons is just as impressive as its inner workings. The earthy tones of the vertically patterned aluminum cladding are inspired by Scarborough’s regional geography. The double-story layering creates a domestic feel, seamlessly integrating the nine-story building into the surrounding low-rise neighborhood. Inside, Harmony Commons offers a vibrant hub of activity. The ground level houses the dining hall, peer resource centers, flexible event spaces, and offices. Placing peer resources near the main residence entrance encourages students to utilize the available support services. Upstairs, the dormitory rooms are arranged in clusters called “communities.” Each community has its own distinct identity, fostering a strong sense of home. Private study spaces, gathering areas, and a common kitchen in each community encourage both planned and spontaneous interactions. Harmony Commons truly stands as a model for sustainable student living.
