Gazing upon Tui Min Hoi Chuen, can you sense the echoes of its unique history? This isn’t just another housing estate. Tui Min Hoi Chuen holds a special place in Hong Kong’s story. It was the first “Rural Public Housing” estate, built in Sai Kung. The Hong Kong Housing Society spearheaded this project in the mid-1980s. Its purpose was to provide affordable homes for indigenous residents displaced by redevelopment. The government funded the construction through a repayable loan, ensuring the project’s financial viability. Tui Min Hoi Chuen opened its doors to residents in 1985. The official opening ceremony, a grand affair graced by Lady Youde, wife of the then Governor Sir Edward Youde, took place in 1986. This marked a significant moment in Hong Kong’s public housing history. The estate boasts a distinct architectural style, reminiscent of traditional Chinese Hakka village houses. The deep ochre walls, white glass mosaic tiled window frames, and circular window designs add to its charm. Iron window grilles enhance security while maintaining the aesthetic appeal. The four blocks, named Hoi Cheung House, Hoi Tak House, Hoi Tai House and Hoi Fu House, rise five stories high. They house 302 flats, ranging in size from a cozy 182 square feet to a more spacious 457 square feet. Imagine families settling into these new homes, a community coming to life. Tui Min Hoi Chuen also features a parking area and a playground for children, adding to its family-friendly environment. Even the former Governor Sir David Wilson and Lady Wilson visited the estate in 1987, underscoring its importance. Tui Min Hoi Chuen stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s commitment to providing affordable housing while preserving a sense of community and heritage.
