Standing here amidst the remnants of the past, can you imagine the roaring steam engines and the pungent aroma of cedar filling the air? This is the 1912 Mill Site, a landmark in Vancouver’s history, where the city’s industrial heart once beat. This site was once a thriving sawmill, a testament to the pioneering spirit that built this city.

In 1865, Captain Edward Stamp established a small sawmilling operation on the south shore of Burrard Inlet. This mill, later known as Hastings Mill, became Vancouver’s first community. The iconic Hastings Mill Store, a two-story wooden building perched above English Bay, served as a social hub, a place to gather, trade, and share stories of hardship and triumph. The store was a vital source of supplies – picks and nails, tonic and tobacco, cloves and fenugreek – everything a settler needed to survive in this wild frontier.

For over sixty years, the mill thrived, supporting Vancouver’s growth. It was a symbol of the city’s industrial might, a place where towering trees were transformed into lumber, shipped to markets near and far. But like all great empires, the mill eventually succumbed to the winds of change.

By 1927, the Hastings Mill was dismantled and scattered across the continent. The mill office was donated to the Anglican Church and became a Seafarers mission. The store, however, was saved from demolition by a remarkable group of women – the Native Daughters of British Columbia. In a valiant effort, they had the store moved, towed by water across English Bay, to its present location on the banks of Jericho.

Today, you can still see the stone foundations of the 1912 Mill Boiler house and the base of the steam sawmill. The remnants of a Donkey Engine, a steam-powered winch, are visible in the woods. Just imagine the scene – the deafening rumble of the mill, the smoke billowing from the boiler, and the tireless workers transforming trees into building materials.

You are standing in a place steeped in history, a place where Vancouver’s early industrial heritage is still tangible. The 1912 Mill Site is a reminder of the ingenuity and determination of Vancouver’s pioneers, the people who laid the foundation for the city we know and love today.
