Was St. George’s Church always this tranquil? It’s hard to imagine, standing here amidst the serenity of the churchyard, that this very ground once witnessed the chaos and destruction of a devastating earthquake. St. George’s Church, as we see it today, is a testament to the resilience of the Antiguan people. Their faith, like the very foundations of this church, was tested and ultimately, strengthened by the tremors of 1843. The original St. George’s Church, a modest wooden structure, was built sometime between 1681 and 1684. It stood within this same churchyard, south of where the current building now stands. Described as “totally destitute of beauty and comfort,” this early church nevertheless served as a spiritual sanctuary for figures like Sir Christopher Codrington. By the early 18th century, the congregation had outgrown the first church, and the building itself was falling into disrepair. A second church, built of brick and cruciform in shape, was erected between 1721 and 1723. It even hosted grand investiture ceremonies, showcasing its importance within the community. This second St. George’s Church wasn’t immune to the forces of nature. The earthquake of 1843 reduced it to rubble. The tower split, monuments crumbled, and the organ pipes were thrown from their positions. Yet, amidst the devastation, the main roof miraculously held firm, a symbol perhaps of the enduring spirit of faith. The present St. George’s Church, built between 1845 and 1847, emerged from the ruins. Constructed from stone and reinforced with pitch pine, it stands as a “church within a church,” designed to withstand both earthquakes and hurricanes. Its silver-painted roof and aluminum-colored cupolas gleam against the sky. This church, which we now know as St. George’s Church, is more than just stones and mortar. It embodies the history of Antigua, the devotion of its people, and their unwavering spirit in the face of adversity. It echoes the past, whispers of resilience, and stands as a beacon of hope for the future.
