The Muizenberg Hebrew Congregation, affectionately known as the Muizenberg Shul, stands as a testament to a unique chapter in South African Jewish history. Established in 1924, the congregation quickly built this synagogue, completing it in 1925. Its purpose was twofold: to serve the burgeoning local Jewish community and the influx of Jewish holidaymakers. The 1920s saw a significant wave of immigration, with around 600 Jewish families from Eastern Europe settling in Muizenberg. They sought refuge from pogroms and later, the looming threat of Nazi persecution. This synagogue, with its neoclassical design and four-columned entrance, became a sanctuary, a place of solace and community for these displaced families. It’s fascinating to consider the prominent figures connected to this shul. Rabbi Lionel Mirvis served this community, as did his son, Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, who later became the Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth. Even Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein and Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis attended the shul’s centenary celebrations in 2024. The Muizenberg Shul continues to thrive today under the leadership of Rabbi Ryan Newman.
