First Baptist Church of Alexandria

Built in 1954 the First Baptist Church of Alexandria stands as a testament to faith. Its original structure sat on eleven acres of land. Over the years it expanded. A five-story education wing and a three-story family activities center were added. This reflects the church’s significant growth. The original building however had never been renovated. The church needed significant improvements. Helbing Lipp Recny Architects stepped in. They helped the church conduct a space needs assessment. Five master site development plans were created. The church chose a plan implemented in four phases. Phase I included three additions. Renovations fulfilled the church’s immediate needs. The landmark front facade of the original church was preserved. The worship center expanded into adjacent courtyards. Seating increased from 885 to 1102. A large flexible platform was created. It maintained much of the old church’s character while incorporating state-of-the-art technology. A new fan-shaped seating layout was installed. Dual video screens theatrical lighting and excellent audio capabilities were added. The acoustics were also improved. A new enlarged narthex was created. Large windows were added to bring in light. This new narthex is the hub of church activity. It connects the education wing worship center and family activities center. The lower level contains new educational space. The 1954 building was renovated. A new stairwell was added. Mechanical and electrical systems were upgraded. A fire suppression system was installed. Future phases will add more educational space and a large parking structure. The First Baptist Church of Alexandria continues to grow and serve its community.
