Journey with me back to April 26, 1970. A new sound crackled to life across the Tokyo airwaves. Tokyo FM, Japan’s third commercial FM radio station, launched that day. It replaced its forerunner, FM Tokai. This marked a pivotal moment in Japanese broadcasting history. Tokyo FM, known as TFM, became the flagship station of the Japan FM Network (JFN). Imagine the excitement as the first notes of music filled the airwaves. Tokyo FM broadcast from the iconic Tokyo Tower. Its signal, a powerful 10,000 watts, reached across the Greater Tokyo area. In 1985, Tokyo FM moved its headquarters. They relocated from Nishi-Shinjuku to their current home in Koujimachi, Chiyoda ward. The station even had a satellite studio. The TOKYO FM Midtown Studio sadly closed in 2017. Today, Tokyo FM continues to be a major force in Japanese radio.
