The JFK Memorial Field Hockey Tournament started nearly fifty years ago. It aimed to promote international goodwill and field hockey.
The tournament was founded by Ganga Dhillon and D Singh. They shared a dream to build friendships through sport. The first tournament was in 1965. It quickly gained popularity. For years the JFK tournament was held right here on the grass fields. Olympic players from various countries participated. The tournament even drew a visit from Pope John Paul II in 1979. He made a brief appearance. He waved to players and spectators.
But playing on grass wasn’t sustainable. By 2000 the tournament had to move to artificial turf. The move was to the University of Maryland in College Park. It later moved to Virginia Beach. The tournament continues to this day. It hosts teams from the US Canada and the Caribbean.
These fields you stand in front of now. They’ve seen many games many goals many memories. They bear witness to the spirit of competition. The spirit of camaraderie.
