Woodmoor isn’t just a name. It’s a story etched in time. Beginning in 1698 with Thomas Spriggs acquiring 500 acres of what was then a vast forest. Generations passed. The land changed hands. Dr Isaac Ducket built Pleasant Prospect a two-story brick house that still stands today at 12806 Woodmore Road. He expanded the estate to over 1000 acres.
The Walkers Washington DC lumber magnates owned the land. They sold the house in 1982 but retained farmland. This land eventually became Woodmore Meadows. Farming families like the Walkers and Shatensteins shaped this land for years. In 1977 a portion of the Shatenstein property was purchased to create the Country Club at Woodmoor. It took fifteen years a merger of seven homeowner associations to complete the gated community.
The Woodmoor gated community boasts roughly 400 homes. These range from townhouses to single family residences. Prices once ranged from $400000 to $2 million. A testament to the area’s prosperity. The Country Club at Woodmore serves as the heart of the community. About 33 percent of residents are members. It’s more than a club it’s a social hub.
Woodmoor’s history extends beyond its houses and clubs. It’s a community rich in African American heritage. But Woodmoor isn’t static. It’s evolving. The northern parts were redefined in 2010 creating the new Fairwood CDP. Woodmoor’s demographics reflect its diversity. Sub-Saharan African ancestry is prominent with many residents tracing their roots to countries like Nigeria Sierra Leone and Ghana. There’s a substantial West Indian population too. This vibrant tapestry makes Woodmoor unique.
