Arlington Community Church

A church for a diverse community. That’s the heart of Arlington Community Church, right here on Wilson Boulevard. Arlington Community Church isn’t just a building. It’s a story woven into the fabric of this community since its humble beginnings in 1932. Originally founded as a Sunday school by John Gregg, a student at the Pacific School of Religion, Arlington Community Church aimed to serve the burgeoning village of Kensington. It wasn’t until 1942 that the first worship service was held, led by another PSR student, Herb Dimmock. Mr. Dimmock quickly became instrumental in shaping the church’s future. In 1944, he gathered the first charter members, established the church’s governing covenant, and secured its affiliation with the Bay Association of Congregational-Christian denomination. He even acquired the bell that still rings from the steeple today. Arlington Community Church continued to grow, especially during the post-World War II boom. Under the leadership of Rev. J. Hood Snavely, additional buildings were added to accommodate the expanding congregation. In 1960, a pivotal year for the church, the current sanctuary was built. This was also the year Arlington Community Church voted to join the newly formed United Church of Christ. The church’s commitment to social justice became increasingly evident during this period, mirroring the broader movements of the 60s and 70s. Arlington Community Church has always been more than just a place of worship. It’s been a hub for community activities, hosting Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 12-step groups, and even a senior activity center. Its influence extends beyond its walls, having spawned institutions like the Kensington newspaper, The Outlook. Arlington Community Church continues to serve the community through its partnerships with organizations like G.R.I.P. and the Contra Costa-Solano Food Bank. It stands as a testament to the power of community, faith, and service.
