What if a humble statue sparked a nationwide devotion? Here at Paroquia Nossa Senhora Aparecida we delve into a story of faith. This story began with three fishermen in 1717. They were tasked with providing fish for a governor’s banquet. Their efforts proved fruitless.
Joao Alves cast his net one last time. Instead of fish he found a piece of wood. It was a statue of the Virgin Mary but the head was missing. He cast again and pulled up the statue’s head. A strange instinct led him to cast a third time. This time the net overflowed with fish. His companions followed suit. They too were overwhelmed with fish.
This miraculous catch spread like wildfire. The fishermen cleaned the statue. Filipe Pedroso housed it in his home. People flocked to honor the Virgin Mary. They prayed the Rosary. She became known as Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Aparecida. This means Our Lady of the Appeared Conception.
The crowds outgrew the small hut. A small chapel was built. Later in 1737 a larger one was erected. Witnesses spoke of graces received. Miracles took place at the sanctuary.
In 1846 work began on a new church. It was completed in 1888. Pope Pius X ordered the statue crowned in 1904. In 1930 Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady of Aparecida the Patroness of Brazil.
Pope John Paul II first visited the Sanctuary of Aparecida in 1980. He noted pilgrims sought faith and sacraments. They sought reconciliation with God. They left strengthened grateful to Our Lady.
The Catedral Basilica Santuario Nacional de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Aparecida stands in Aparecida. It is the largest Catholic temple in Brazil. Only the Basilica of Sao Pedro in the Vatican is larger. It is the world’s largest cathedral. The Vatican Basilica is not a cathedral. The sanctuary spans over 143000 square meters.
Pope John Paul II consecrated the structure in 1980. The Conferencia Nacional dos Bispos do Brasil elevated it to a national sanctuary in 1984. It is in the city center. The Passarela da Fe connects it to the old basilica. Three popes have visited John Paul II Benedict XVI and Francis.
In 2016 Pope Francis declared the basilica the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Aparecida. Approximately 12 million pilgrims visit annually. In 2017 a record 13 million visited.
The statue is believed to be the work of Frei Agostino de Jesus. He was a monk in Sao Paulo. The statue resided in Felipe Pedroso’s house. This became a popular prayer site. His family built a small chapel. It was replaced in 1734 and again in 1834 with the first basilica. Work on the current building began in 1955. It can hold over 30000 people.
Benedito Calixto Neto designed the new basilica. Construction began in 1955. It is in the Neo Romanesque style. It forms a Greek cross. Its arms are 188 meters long and 183 meters wide. The cupola is 70 meters high. The tower reaches 109 meters. The basilica covers 23000 square meters. The main hall can accommodate 30000 people or 300000 during outdoor events.
The Basilica Nova was built on Morro das Pitas. Landscaping began in 1952. The Torre Brasilia’s metal structure was donated by President Juscelino Kubitschek. The Passarela da Fe connects the old church and basilica. It is 392 meters long. Some faithful cross it on their knees.
Pope Benedict XVI visited in 2007. He awarded the Sanctuary a Golden Rose. Pope Francis visited in 2013 during World Youth Day. The Vatican recognized the Santuario Nacional de Aparecida as the Catedral Arquidiocesana de Aparecida in 2016.
The sanctuary accommodates large crowds. It has ramps elevators and non slip surfaces. It offers medical assistance a food court shops and a playground. Parking accommodates 2000 buses and 3000 cars. Security includes 200 agents surveillance cameras and patrols.
The basilica has received the Golden Rose three times. Pope Paul VI gave the first in 1967. Pope Benedict XVI blessed the second in 2007. Pope Francis gave the third in 2017.
