Alfred B. Mullett’s folly. That’s how some whispered about these grand Mullett Rowhouses. Look at them. 2517, 2519, and 2525 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Grand Queen Anne homes, rising in red brick and sandstone. The year is 1889. Architect Alfred B. Mullett, the man behind the State, War, and Navy Building, envisioned these not as separate homes, but as a single, sprawling mansion, broken into luxurious townhouses. He designed them to be taller, wider, bolder than their neighbors. The large projecting bays, the round-arch windows, the dormers reaching for the sky, and the elegant mansard roof. All whispered of luxury and ambition. Mullett poured his heart, soul, and finances into this speculative project. He dreamed of attracting Washington’s elite. He gambled, and he lost. The financial strain proved too much. A tragic end followed for the architect. The Mullett Rowhouses stand as a testament to his vision. They are a symbol of both his grand ambition and his ultimate downfall. Today, they are listed on the District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites and the National Register of Historic Places. They are a reminder of a talented architect’s dream, forever etched in the heart of Washington D.C.’s West End.
