Buried secrets. Whispers of fortunes lost and reclaimed. This is the story of the Ephrussi grab, a tomb holding more than just remains. The Ephrussi family, a name synonymous with wealth and influence, left an indelible mark on Vienna. Their story, however, is not one of unbroken prosperity. It’s a tale of dramatic rises, devastating falls, and the enduring power of memory.

The Ephrussi family, originally grain merchants from Odessa, established their banking empire in Vienna in 1856. Ignaz Ephrussi, son of the family patriarch Charles Joachim Ephrussi, spearheaded this venture. Their wealth grew, their influence expanded, and their name became a symbol of Viennese high society. They owned palaces, amassed art collections, and their lives intertwined with the cultural elite of the era. One of their most prominent residences was the Palais Ephrussi, a grand building on the Ringstrasse, designed by the renowned architect Theophil von Hansen, who also designed the Austrian Parliament Building.

This opulence, however, couldn’t withstand the encroaching darkness of the Nazi regime. In 1938, the Anschluss shattered their world. Viktor Ephrussi, Ignaz’s son, was forced to make an impossible choice: surrender his family’s fortune or face imprisonment in Dachau. He signed away everything, including the Palais Ephrussi and its treasures. The family was left with nothing but the clothes on their backs and the memories of a life stolen.

The Ephrussi family’s story is poignantly captured in Edmund de Waal’s memoir, “The Hare with Amber Eyes”. De Waal, a descendant of the Ephrussis, tells the story of his family’s journey through five generations. At the heart of his narrative is a collection of Japanese netsuke, miniature sculptures that miraculously survived the Nazi plunder, hidden away by a loyal servant. These small, intricate objects became a powerful symbol of the family’s resilience and a tangible link to their lost world. The netsuke, including the eponymous hare, eventually made their way back to the family and are now a testament to their enduring legacy. The Ephrussi grab, while a somber reminder of loss, also symbolizes the family’s enduring spirit, their ability to rebuild and remember in the face of unimaginable adversity. It is a quiet testament to a family whose story echoes through the streets of Vienna, a reminder of the fragility of fortune and the enduring power of memory.
