What if stones could speak? This Sir Herbert Baker Plaque marks more than just a building. It commemorates a legacy etched in stone across South Africa and beyond.

Sir Herbert Baker was a dominant force in South African architecture for two decades. He left an indelible mark on the landscape. Born in England in 1862 Baker’s journey to South Africa began almost by chance.

In 1892, he visited his brother and was soon commissioned by Cecil Rhodes. His task was to remodel Groote Schuur. It was Rhodes’ house on Table Mountain’s slopes. This commission was a major coup for the young architect. Rhodes then sponsored Baker’s studies in Greece Italy and Egypt. This further shaped his architectural vision.

Baker’s influence spread. Lord Milner invited him to design residences in Transvaal. Baker became captivated by the Cape Dutch style. He established his practice. It was known as Herbert Baker Kendall and Morris. His work extended throughout South Africa. It reached Durban Grahamstown and Bloemfontein.

He designed many churches schools and houses. Among them are the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Also St. Andrew’s College in Grahamstown and St. John’s College in Johannesburg. Even Wynberg Boys’ High School in Cape Town bears his mark.

Baker’s designs reflected a blend of styles. He combined classicism with local materials. He used granite sandstone and indigenous woods. This approach created buildings that were both grand and uniquely South African.

Let’s not forget the Union Buildings. In 1909 Baker was commissioned to design these iconic buildings. They became the administrative center of the Union of South Africa. The cornerstone was laid in 1910 and completed in 1913. The buildings feature two identical wings connected by a semi-circular colonnade. This design created a stunning amphitheater.

Baker’s impact wasn’t limited to South Africa. He collaborated with Sir Edwin Lutyens in New Delhi. Together they designed Parliament House and Secretariat buildings. His work extended to Kenya. He designed the European School in Nairobi and the East African Railways Headquarters.

Sir Herbert Baker received many honors. He was knighted in 1926. He was elected to the Royal Academy. He received the Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1927.

This Sir Herbert Baker Plaque serves as a reminder. It honors an architect whose vision shaped a nation’s identity. His buildings stand as testaments to his skill and enduring legacy. They continue to inspire awe and admiration.
