Established in 1966 by the Maryknoll Fathers Maryknoll Fathers’ School stands as a testament to their enduring commitment to education. This wasn’t just any school. It was born from a desire to serve the underprivileged in Sham Shui Po. Initially offering classes for Forms 1 to 3 the school was divided by gender boys studying engineering and girls business. Father Howard D Trube a driving force behind its creation envisioned a place where students regardless of background could access a quality secondary education.

Maryknoll Fathers’ School wasn’t isolated from the larger Maryknoll mission. The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers a Catholic society founded in the United States had been involved in education across China since the 1920s. Their impact extended to various other schools in Hong Kong including Bishop Ford School and St John the Baptist School. These institutions were vital in providing education particularly during the post-World War II era when a surge of refugees flooded the area needing schooling.

The expansion of Maryknoll Fathers’ School was significant. In 1978 it was renamed Maryknoll Technical Secondary School offering a full five-year curriculum. Later becoming co-educational in 1997 it transformed into a seven-year grammar school. A new wing was added in 2005 enhancing its facilities and academic programs. This reflected the evolving needs of the community and a commitment to holistic student development.

The story of Maryknoll Fathers’ School transcends mere bricks and mortar. It’s a narrative of dedication service and a profound commitment to education. It speaks to the impact of the Maryknoll Fathers and their enduring legacy in shaping the lives of countless students. The school’s development reflects the wider historical context of Hong Kong particularly the changes in the post-war period and the growth of the city. Its transformation from a gender-segregated technical school to a co-educational grammar school showcases the adaptation and evolution over time. It stands today as a vibrant institution continuing to serve the community and embody the spirit of its founders.
