Once a private residence now stands the CAA Theatre. It is located at 651 Yonge Street. This is just south of Bloor in downtown Toronto. The site has a rich history. It has been a cinema and a live theatre.
In 1911, the building was a private residence. By 1919, it became a cinema named The Victory. In 1934, the cinema was renamed The Embassy. Over the years, it was also known as The Astor, The Showcase and The Festival. Notably, The Festival was the Toronto International Film Festival’s premier venue in the 1970s.
In 1993, it was renovated into The New Yorker Theatre. This marked its transition to a legitimate theatre. Then in 2005, the building underwent a complete rebuild. Only its facade was preserved. It reopened as The Panasonic Theatre, a state-of-the-art live theatre.
Mirvish Productions purchased the theatre in 2008. A partnership with CAA led to its renaming on December 1, 2018. Thus, it became the CAA Theatre.
The CAA Theatre is an intimate venue. It has 700 seats. These are divided between the Orchestra and Balcony levels. The last row in the balcony is only 85 feet from the stage. This makes for an engaging experience. The CAA Theatre is suitable for small productions, comedies and concerts. It also hosts graduations and meetings.
Inside the CAA Theatre, accessibility is a priority. The main level is fully accessible. Automated doors are at the front entrance. Access is provided to the box office, coat check and bar. Accessible seating is available on the Orchestra level. The Balcony level offers some seating options for special needs.
