Is it just me, or does that student statue over there look awfully comfortable? That, my friends, is the Ławeczka Studenta. It’s a bronze sculpture by Andrzej Renes, and it’s become quite a beloved spot on the University of Warsaw campus. The sculpture depicts a student lounging on a bench, seemingly lost in thought. He’s surrounded by his books, one even has a page pulled out as if he’s about to make a note. You’ll notice a copy of “Auditorium” magazine by his side, a nod to the student newspaper that helped make this statue a reality! The Ławeczka Studenta was unveiled in 2003. It was the culmination of a decade-long project initiated by Jarosław Włodarczyk and the “Auditorium” Academic Weekly. The story goes that they held a casting call for students to be the face of this “eternal student.” Imagine that, vying for the chance to be immortalized in bronze! The lucky student was Maciej Robak, and his features were forever captured in this charming sculpture. Take a closer look at the bench. You’ll see inscriptions of student sayings and the names of those who helped fund the project. It’s a true testament to student life and the spirit of this university.
