Franco da Rocha wasn’t always a city. It started as a humble stopping point. Tropeiros and travelers used it as a resting place. They called it Parada do Feijão the bean stop. The area’s history officially traces back to 1627. King Joao IV of Portugal granted sesmarias land grants. This stimulated settlement and development. Amador Bueno da Ribeira received a large portion. This is how the story of Franco da Rocha began to unfold.
But the real transformation came later. The construction of the Hospital Psiquiátrico do Juquery in 1885 marked a turning point. This massive psychiatric hospital was the largest in Brazil and Latin America. It was designed by Ramos de Azevedo. The hospital’s construction created jobs and opportunities. It also fueled the growth of Franco da Rocha. It even had its own power plant. This supplied electricity to the town and the Juquery station.
Dr Francisco Franco da Rocha took over the hospital in 1896 after Frederico Alvarenga died. He was responsible for its expansion and success. The town was named after him as a sign of respect and gratitude. The town’s religious heart also grew strong. In 1908 the construction of the Igreja Matriz began. It is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição. This is the patron saint of Franco da Rocha. Education was also developing. The first schools were built. The first was often flooded. In 1909 a new boys’ school opened on Rua Azevedo Soares.
Franco da Rocha became a district of Mairiporã in 1934. Ten years later in 1944 it became its own municipality. It achieved independence. Today Franco da Rocha continues to grow.
