Dreaming of academic excellence? Brackenfell High School might be the place. Established in 1976, Brackenfell High stands as a beacon of education in the Western Cape. But its roots stretch back much further.

In 1906, Janet Brink, a widow with a vision, donated land for a school. It was a single acre. While a school was being built, lessons were held in Mr. CM Nagel’s home. In April 1906, with Miss Miller at the helm, eighteen students began their education in a single room. The school grew quickly. By 1949, there were 202 students. A bigger school was needed.

A new building opened in 1960. It was classified as a middle school. Then, in 1973, it became a full high school. Student numbers continued to rise. A new, larger school was built in 1975. Brackenfell High opened its doors in January 1976. Exactly seventy years after the initial dream, the new school welcomed 234 students. There were fourteen teachers and one secretary. Dr. PS Meyer officially opened the school on August 14, 1976.

Brackenfell High is known for its achievements in culture. Drama, dance, writing, and music thrive here. The school provides opportunities for learners to grow. They can achieve success in many fields.

The school’s motto is “Altiora Spero!” It means “I aspire to higher things!” Dr. C Pama designed the school’s badge. Rika du Plessis wrote the school song. Dr. Dirkie de Villiers set it to music. The badge and song were introduced on September 11, 1978.

In 1992, an activity center was built. It was named after Mr. O Theron. He was the principal at the time. He led the project. Mr. André Pretorius became principal in 2003. The school expanded. Facilities were upgraded. A pavilion with 1,000 seats opened in 2010. Jannie Muller took over as principal in 2017.
