Tai Tam Country Park occupies 1,315 hectares. That’s about 3,250 acres. It borders Wong Nai Chung Gap to the west. Stanley Gap Road marks its southern edge.
Within Tai Tam Country Park lies the Tai Tam Group of Reservoirs. These reservoirs were built between 1888 and 1917. They include Tai Tam Upper Reservoir, Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir, and Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. Together, they hold 9 million cubic meters of water. These reservoirs once played a vital role in supplying freshwater to Hong Kong. Today, they are still important.
Tai Tam Country Park also holds remnants of World War II. You can find anti-aircraft gun platforms, magazines, and pillboxes here. Tai Tam was a fierce battleground during the war. Invading Japanese forces met strong resistance from British troops. These remnants serve as reminders of the past. They stand in stark contrast to the park’s scenic beauty.
Tai Tam Valley is a highlight of the park. It is a green pocket surrounded by peaks. These peaks include Violet Hill, Jardine’s Lookout, Mount Butler, and Mount Parker. Mount Parker rises to 532 meters. Rainwater flows down ravines creating streams. This nourishes the valley’s diverse plant life. The government designated Tai Tam a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the 1970s. This protects its natural treasures from development.
Follow Stage 6 of the Hong Kong Trail to see Tai Tam Valley. The trail starts at Mount Parker Road. It goes up Quarry Gap and descends to woods, streams, and lakes. A path around Tai Tam Reservoir offers views of the valley.
Tai Tam Country Park offers various facilities. Picnic and barbecue areas are located along Mount Parker Road and Tai Tam Reservoir Road. Rain shelters are also available. Morning walkers can enjoy a garden in Quarry Bay. Quarry Bay Jogging Trail is a 2,500-meter route along Sir Cecil’s Ride. It extends from Mount Parker Road to Braemar Hill. A lookout offers views of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
Tai Tam Country Park is home to diverse flora and fauna. After WWII, reforestation efforts revived the valley. Common tree species include Taiwan Acacia and Slash Pine. You can also find natural shrubs and flowering plants. These include Hong Kong Gordonia and Rhododendrons.
The dense woodlands are habitats for native animals. Common Muntjacs and Chinese Leopard Cats are present. Styan Squirrels and other mammals are also common. Birds include Hwameis, Magpie Robins, and Black Kites.
Many amphibians live along the hill streams. The Hong Kong Newt can be found here. Romer’s Tree Frog was relocated here from Lantau. Reptiles include venomous snakes. Insects such as butterflies and spiders also inhabit Tai Tam Valley.
Jardine’s Lookout offers views of Victoria Harbour. Stage 5 of the Hong Kong Trail passes through here. It’s a challenging hike. The views make it worthwhile. Stage 1 and 2 of the Wilson Trail also cut through Tai Tam Country Park. These trails offer dreamy seascapes.
Tai Tam Country Park borders Shek O Country Park. Tai Tam Road separates them. You can walk from one park to the other. The area’s geology includes granitic rocks and volcanic rocks. A granite quarry operated on Mount Butler from 1954 to 1991.
