Could this grand edifice, this VŠCHT budova A, have ever imagined being the heart of a university independent from its alma mater? Today, VŠCHT budova A stands proudly as the main building of the University of Chemistry and Technology, Prague. But its story began entangled with that of the Czech Technical University. In 1925, President Masaryk himself participated in laying the cornerstone of this building. It was intended as the first in a planned complex for the Czech Technical University in Dejvice. The architecture was chosen to harmonize with this modern and aesthetically pleasing district. VŠCHT budova A was finally inaugurated in 1933 as the home of the University of Chemical and Technological Engineering, then still a part of Czech Technical University. Construction of subsequent buildings, however, faced financial difficulties. Only one more building, now known as VŠCHT budova B, was completed in 1937. It wasn’t until 1952 that the University of Chemical and Technological Engineering was separated from the Czech Technical University. The institution was reorganized into several faculties, marking the birth of the independent University of Chemical Technology, Prague, as we know it. Yet, VŠCHT budova A remains a tangible link to the university’s intertwined past.
