Martingrove Collegiate Institute’s story began over five decades ago. The Etobicoke community was growing fast. The institute was founded to meet the increasing need for quality education. For a short time, Martingrove students attended Burnamthorpe C.I. due to construction delays. They shared the school in a split shift.
Martingrove Collegiate Institute is more than just classrooms and hallways. Its motto is “Lumen in Vobis Est.” That is Latin for “The Light is Within You.” This reflects the school’s dedication to nurturing the potential in every student. The Martingrove Bears are the school’s proud mascot. Brown, white, and orange are the school colors.
Academically, Martingrove Collegiate Institute shines. It has a strong academic program. Martingrove offers Advanced Placement courses. Students can earn university credits while still in high school. The school also offers specialized programs in Business and Technological Studies and STEM.
Extracurricular activities are abundant at Martingrove Collegiate Institute. The Martingrove Bears excel in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and track and field. Arts thrive through visual arts, music, drama, and dance programs. Martingrove Collegiate Institute boasts many clubs. There is a Math Club, a Science Club, and an Environmental Club.
Martingrove Collegiate Institute hosts the Martingrove Model United Nations. This annual event attracts students from across the Toronto District School Board. Notable figures have spoken here. Bob Rae, Allan Rock, and Jean Chrétien are among them.
The Martingrove Beacon is the school’s student-run news magazine. It has won 15 Toronto Star High School Newspaper awards. Before 2002 the school newspaper was named “The Bear Facts”. The Auditorium Facilities Crew manages stage productions and events. They’ve even hosted a Toronto mayoral debate.
Many notable alumni have walked these halls. Tom Cochrane the musician is an alumni. Kiefer Sutherland the actor is also an alumni. Bruce Driver the former NHL player attended Martingrove. Daniel DeSanto the actor known from Half Baked and Mean Girls studied here. Ravi Vakil a Mathematics Professor at Stanford University graduated here.
