Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church began its journey ministering to Orthodox Christians. The church family has grown over the years. It provides a place for parishioners to fully participate in the life of the Church. Saint Katherine helps them find salvation in Jesus Christ.
The church’s mission is clear. It proclaims and lives the Orthodox Christian faith. Saint Katherine fosters a loving environment. It promotes diverse ministries.
Saint Katherine Greek Orthodox Church first opened its doors on November 28, 1971. Bishop Iakovos led the Divine Liturgy. Local dignitaries, including the Governor of North Carolina, attended. In 1991, the church expanded with a Fellowship Hall. Currently, about 40 families are members.
The church is led by a presiding priest and a parish council. They oversee the church’s affairs. Funds are raised through member contributions. The popular annual pastry sales and souvlaki dinners draw many from the local community.
Saint Katherine offers many programs. There is a Sunday school. A Greek language school is available. The Ladies Philoptohos Society is also active. The traditional Byzantine liturgy is supported by chanters and, sometimes, a small choir with an organ.
Since 1971, several priests have served Saint Katherine. Father Andrew Georgaroudakis was the first. He was followed by part-time priests from nearby cities. In 1978, Father Panagiotis T. Vlahos, a retired priest from Winston-Salem, was appointed. He served for 12 years. His son, Father George P. Vlahos, succeeded him in 1990.
Father George’s leadership led to the church’s consecration on April 28, 2007. The Archdiocese raised its status from a mission to a regular parish church. He retired in 2019.
Currently, Fr. Demetrios Sean Govostes is the presiding priest at Saint Katherine. He began his priestly training in 1998. He was ordained in 2003. He has served as a parish priest, a hospital chaplain, and a missionary priest.
Saint Katherine also hosts the Hellenic Education Center. It includes Greek School and Paideia Preschool. The center is the only official examination site in Northern Virginia for Ellinomatheia Exams. These exams certify Greek language proficiency. The center has been accredited by the Ministry of Culture, Education and Religious Affairs.
Special events enrich the community. Saint Katherine presented “The Path of the Sacred Passion.” This Byzantine Music Concert featured talented musicians. Proceeds benefited the church.
