Imagine the roar of the crowd. Feel the anticipation in the air at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. This is no ordinary lake. This is where champions are made.

The Sydney International Regatta Centre or SIRC is located in Penrith. That’s about an hour northwest of Sydney’s CBD. Built for the 2000 Summer Olympics, SIRC is a premier sporting venue. It is also an entertainment destination.

But its history began long before the Olympics. In 1968, the idea to transform old gravel quarries into lakes was born. In 1980, the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation was established. Their goal was to create a recreational space. The Sydney International Regatta Centre was a key part of this plan. It opened in 1995.

SIRC spans 196 hectares. The competition lake is 2300 meters long. A warm-up lake stretches 1500 meters. The lakes have a width of 170 meters and an average depth of 5 meters. Over 50000 native aquatic plants thrive underwater. More than 30000 native trees and shrubs enhance the landscape. A 5 km cycling and running loop surrounds the course.

Woods Bagot designed the spectator pavilion. It seats 1000 people undercover. SIRC also features conference rooms. These rooms have audio and visual equipment. The island alone can hold 20000 people. The entire venue can accommodate 30000. With approval, SIRC can host up to 50000 people. Parking is available for 2000 cars.

SIRC draws water from the Nepean River system. It is a model for sustainable water management. Since 1996, the water quality has been suitable for primary contact 95% of the time. This is achieved with minimal intervention. No chemical treatments are necessary. The lakebed is planted with native aquatic plants. Bass fingerlings were introduced to balance the ecosystem.

Sustainability was a key focus during development. Solar panels on the finishing tower feed into the local grid. This saves 2.8 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. The Pavilion uses natural ventilation. It also uses efficient lighting. The parking lot is mostly grassed to minimize environmental impact.

The Sydney International Regatta Centre has hosted many events. The Australian Rowing Championships have been held here eleven times. The NSW Schoolboy and Schoolgirl Head of The River regatta has been a regular event since 1997. During the 2000 Olympics, SIRC hosted rowing and canoe sprint events.
