Once, the Middle Patuxent River faced severe pollution. Farm runoff and construction threatened its waters. The water quality was at its lowest in the 1980s. Development for Columbia exacerbated the issue. But in 1991, The Rouse Company stepped in. They proposed selling the land to a trust managed by Howard County. The sale price was $2.2 million.
Students also contributed to the cause. In 1993, they raised $16,000 to save the historic Pfieffers Corner schoolhouse. The schoolhouse was to be moved to the new Clarksville Environmental Area.
In 1996, Program Open Space funds were used to purchase the land. Howard Research and Development sold the 1,021 acres. They donated $1.76 million to establish the Middle Patuxent Environmental Foundation.
The Clarksville Environmental Area is home to diverse wildlife. Over 40 species of mammals live here. Numerous amphibians, reptiles, fishes, and plants thrive in the area. The area boasts 5.4 miles of hiking trails. These include the Wildlife Loop Trail and the South Wind Trail. Both trails run along the Middle Patuxent River.

The Clarksville Environmental Area also has a rich history. Records show that Charles Carroll of Carrollton once owned part of the area. Carroll was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. He also served as a U.S. Senator.
