On a hilltop overlooking Zurich sits the Grosse Kirche Fluntern. Can you hear the faint echo of history whispering through its walls? The Grosse Kirche Fluntern stands as a testament to the growth and changing needs of the Fluntern district. Originally, the area was served by the Alte Kirche Fluntern. But as the population boomed, the small church became inadequate. Around 1906, after years of debate, plans for a larger church began. A deal was struck with the city of Zurich to exchange the old church’s land for a larger plot. This paved the way for the Grosse Kirche Fluntern. A competition was held in 1913, attracting an impressive 92 designs. The winning entry came from the architectural firm Curjel & Moser. Construction began in the summer of 1918. The church was inaugurated on March 21, 1920. The six bells, cast by H. Rüetschi in Aarau, were installed in May of the same year. These bells chime in the sequence As0 c’ es’ f’ as’ b’. They play a variation of the hymn “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” with a doubled base note. The Grosse Kirche Fluntern can accommodate a large number of people. It can hold up to 1,000 people with or without chairs. The church boasts a range of facilities, including an organ, piano, projector, audio system and a stage. It is also wheelchair accessible. Today, the Grosse Kirche Fluntern serves as more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant community hub, hosting concerts, theatrical performances and church celebrations. Its imposing presence and stunning architecture make it a true landmark of the Fluntern district. Imagine the music echoing through this grand space, the voices joining in hymns, and the laughter shared during community gatherings. The Grosse Kirche Fluntern isn’t just a building; it’s a living, breathing part of Zurich’s story.
