Ever wondered about a place where you can find almost 4,000 species of Australian native plants? That place is Mount Annan. It is a suburb of Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. Welcome to a journey through its history and significance.
Mount Annan sits 60 kilometers south-west of Sydney’s central business district. The area was once home to the Dharawal people. The Darug and Gandangara people also inhabited the greater Camden area.
In 1805 John Macarthur received a grant of 5,000 acres at Cowpastures. This area is now Camden. After clearing, the land became farmland for 200 years. Later, Mount Annan emerged as Sydney’s suburban sprawl reached Camden.
But Mount Annan’s story goes back further. Before European settlement, this land was a meeting place. The Dharawal, Dharug, and Gundungurra Nations gathered here.
In 1818 Magistrate William Howe was granted 3,000 acres. This land became the Glenlee estate. Howe named it after his hometown of Annan in Scotland. The rolling hills reminded him of home. The high point in the western part of the locality is Mount Annan, 190 metres above sea level. It only appears on published maps after 1834.
The Fitzpatrick family acquired Glenlee in the 1850s. They ran a dairy farm there until 1978. Parts of the estate were set aside for housing. Other parts became a Scenic Protection Zone, now part of the Mount Annan Botanic Garden.
The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan is the highlight of the suburb. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney acquired the site in 1984. The first plantings occurred in 1985. The Duke and Duchess of York officially opened the garden in 1988. It was a New South Wales Government Bicentennial project.
Did you know that Mount Annan is Australia’s biggest botanic garden? It attracts over 90,000 visitors each year. It features themed native gardens and endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland.
The garden also safeguards rare species. It collects seeds and propagates plants. One example is the Wollemi Pine.
An interesting piece of history lies on the garden’s eastern side. A water canal was built in 1880. Sandstone blocks were used in its construction. People think they were quarried from Mount Annan. This canal supplied much of Sydney’s water until 1960.
Mount Annan also has a Stolen Generations Memorial. It serves as a place of remembrance and reconciliation.
The population of Mount Annan was 11,784 in 2021.
Mount Annan offers more than just natural beauty. It provides sporting facilities like the Mount Annan Leisure Centre. This centre is home to the Mount Annan Swimming Club. The Mount Annan Mustangs is the local soccer club.
Mount Annan Netball Club was founded in 1993.
The Mount Annan Marketplace and Mount Annan Central offer shopping options. You can find various cuisines in the area. There are Italian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, and American restaurants.
So, as we conclude our tour, remember Mount Annan. It’s a place where history, nature, and community intertwine.
