What remains today of the Schanze Gerasdorfer Straße is a testament to Vienna’s turbulent past. You might be surprised to learn that this tranquil park was once a fort. It was part of an intricate defensive line built in 1866 during the Austro-Prussian War. Schanze Gerasdorfer Straße, originally known as “Werk XVIII”, was strategically positioned to defend Vienna from a potential Prussian attack. This network of 31 forts, or “Schanzen” as they are called in German, stretched from Langenzersdorf to the Lobau, forming a protective arc around the city. However, the Schanze Gerasdorfer Straße, like many of its counterparts, never saw actual combat. A peace agreement between Austria and Prussia was reached, rendering the forts strategically irrelevant. Today, the Schanze Gerasdorfer Straße has been transformed into a peaceful park. It stands as a silent reminder of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into Vienna’s fascinating military history.
